Our Family Camp
One of the primary components of the Mirasol eating disorder treatment program is our required Family Program. Disordered eating patterns deeply affect personal relationships and families, resulting in high levels of tension and stress and even exacerbating whatever difficulties may have existed before. Problems of excess weight, bulimia nervosa , anorexia nervosa, and the underlying psychological issues affect every member of the family.
Family support and commitment are crucial to the successful treatment of teens in the program. We define "family" as those individuals who value and love the client. These are the people who share in the aching isolation and confusion typical of these diseases — and the joy of recovery.
Eating disorders not only affect the individual but may also severely damage the person's relationships with family and friends. Communication with the family is often strained or even nonexistent.
The program focuses on building stronger bonds between family members regarding eating disorder issues and on restoring trust and open communication. Families receive training in nutrition, meal planning, grocery shopping, and cooking as well as learning to enjoy eating together. They explore ways they can work together to help their daughter's transition when she returns home.
A typical "family camp" includes lectures, educational programs and group therapy offering all family members the opportunity to share their concerns and to learn more about each other in a structured environment facilitated by skilled family therapists.
