A Letter from Mirasol's Founder and CEO

Ahhhh ... it has finally cooled down here in Arizona. We haven't had any temperatures over 100° for awhile so it feels like fall is in the air!

Over the past six weeks, I've spent time in Manhattan Beach, California, with my son and granddaughter, and in Alaska as well (on business). It's good to be home and back at work helping our clients!

This month's Sunflower features a subject dear to my heart: relapse prevention. A person can receive the very best treatment in the world (such as what we offer at Mirasol!) and still be at high risk for relapse if she does not have an intensive aftercare plan. And by "intensive" — I mean more than just a weekly visit to a therapist!

Does this sound familiar? After struggling for years with anorexia, bulimia or compulsive overeating, your client or friend or daughter finally gets the help she needs in a residential treatment program. The first few weeks are difficult, but gradually she begins to explore the underlying issues that may have produced her eating disorder and to experiment with new behaviors and new ways of expressing herself. She goes home at the end of treatment a changed woman, committed to rebuilding her life. But once she's back in familiar surroundings, the old pressures — and the old demons — return, and so may her unhealthy ways of coping with them.

Does this mean she's no longer in recovery? Not at all! To paraphrase the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, "Recovery is a journey, not a destination."

Recipe of the Month: Tortilla Soup

Fall is almost here — and I always feel in a nesting mood when the weather begins to change. I think about stews, soups, fires, knitting .. warm cozy thoughts! One of my favorite soup recipes is a wonderful southwestern tortilla soup. It's very low in fat, a little spicy, and served with a simple green salad and some hot bread, it's guaranteed to make you feel cozy, too!
